Recently, Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of India and Tajikistan were shaken up by an earthquake. With its epicentre in Afghanistan, it was a critical one having magnitude of 7.5. Being dated 26, it was in news due to some irrational arguments. In retrospect, numerous disasters were found to occur on 26th day of the month. Some vacuous people raised certain questions while some presented unjustifiable stories as the answers. An earthquake is a natural disaster which is also known as a quake, tremor or temblor. It is the perceptible shaking of the surface caused by the sudden breaking and movement of large sections (tectonic plates) of the earth’s rocky outermost crust. The edges of the tectonic plates are marked by faults or fractures. Most earthquakes occur along the fault lines when the plates slide past each other or collide against each other. Earthquakes are well known for the damage and destruction they leave behind.

1. Great Chilean Earthquake :

The Great Chilean earthquake is also known as 1960 Valdivia earthquake. It occurred in the afternoon (19:11 GMT, 15:11 local time) on 22 May, 1960 and lasted approximately for 10 minutes with the magnitude of 9.5 Mw. Its epicentre was near lumaco but it also affected southern Chile, Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, eastern New Zealand, southeast Australia, and the Aleutian Islands. More…
